NIMASA Takes Anti-Stowaway Campaign to Grassroots Communities in Lagos
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has intensified efforts to curb stowaway activities by taking its public enlightenment campaign directly to grassroots communities, with a recent outreach held at Snake Island in Lagos.
The sensitisation programme brought together community leaders, youths, and residents to educate them on the dangers, risks, and legal consequences associated with stowing away on vessels.
Speaking during the engagement, the Head of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code Unit at NIMASA, Mr. Mudi Isa, said the campaign forms part of the Agency’s proactive measures to tackle the persistent challenge of stowaways within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
According to him, stowaway incidents not only endanger the lives of individuals involved but also tarnish Nigeria’s image within the global maritime community.
He noted that the country’s maritime sector continues to face reputational and security concerns arising from stowaway cases, stressing that awareness and community participation remain critical in addressing the problem.
“NIMASA is committed to reducing and ultimately eliminating stowaway incidents through sustained public enlightenment and stakeholder engagement. Communities located around ports and waterways have a vital role to play in preventing such activities,” Isa stated.
Residents of Snake Island commended NIMASA for bringing the campaign to their community, describing the initiative as timely and impactful. They noted that the awareness programme had provided valuable information on the dangers associated with illegal migration attempts through maritime routes and pledged to support efforts aimed at discouraging the practice.
The outreach is part of NIMASA’s broader strategy to strengthen maritime security, promote compliance with international maritime standards, and foster collaboration with coastal communities in safeguarding Nigeria’s waterways.
Industry observers have consistently highlighted the need for increased awareness at the community level, noting that many stowaway incidents originate from areas located close to ports, jetties, and waterfront settlements.
By extending its campaign beyond port facilities and into local communities, NIMASA aims to build stronger partnerships with residents and stakeholders in the fight against stowaway activities, while enhancing Nigeria’s standing in international maritime operations.
