No Hiding Behind Wealth or Fame, Marwa Warns as NDLEA Busts International Drug Ring

Barely 24 hours after destroying illicit drugs valued at over ₦380 million in Lagos, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded another major success with the dismantling of an international drug trafficking syndicate and the arrest of suspected cartel members in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

The latest breakthrough underscores the Agency's sustained offensive against drug trafficking and organised criminal networks operating within and outside Nigeria.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), disclosed the development while commending the Agency's officers and international partners for their role in the successful operation.
Marwa described the achievement as a significant milestone in international law enforcement cooperation, noting that the near-simultaneous arrests carried out in Nigeria and the United Kingdom demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence sharing and cross-border collaboration in combating transnational organised crime.

He praised the Agency's international partners as well as the NDLEA Special Investigation Team, under the coordination of the Director of Operations and General Investigation, for their diligence, professionalism and commitment in unraveling the drug trafficking network.

According to him, the operation exposed the sophisticated methods employed by criminal syndicates to traffic illicit substances across international borders while attempting to evade law enforcement authorities.

"To those who believe they can hide behind luxury brands, glamorous lifestyles, and social media personas while trafficking poison into our communities and across our borders, this Agency will find you. It does not matter how well-connected, how wealthy, or how far you attempt to run. As this case demonstrates, we will track you to the departure gate if we must," Marwa said.

The NDLEA boss reaffirmed the Agency's commitment to protecting Nigerian communities, particularly young people, from the harmful effects of illicit drugs. He assured Nigerians that the Agency would continue to intensify efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks and prevent the country from being used as a transit route for narcotics destined for other parts of the world.

He also pledged continued collaboration with local and international law enforcement agencies to combat the growing threat posed by organised drug cartels and transnational criminal groups.

The development comes on the heels of the Agency's destruction of illicit drugs worth more than ₦380 million in Lagos, highlighting what observers describe as an intensified nationwide crackdown on narcotics trafficking and abuse.

The statement was signed by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, and issued from the Agency's headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
