At the heart of the glittering Mediterranean principality of Monaco, where global leaders gathered for the 2025 Blue Economy and Finance Forum, Nigeria took center stage.  By reaffirming its strong commitment to sustainable ocean governance.

Leading the charge was the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, who passionately outlined Nigeria’s vision for a future where the nation’s ocean resources are not just protected but actively harnessed for economic growth, environmental sustainability, and global collaboration.  

“We see the blue economy as a vital pillar of national growth,” Oyetola declared during a high-level session, “and we are focused on fostering partnerships that drive innovation, investment, and environmental stewardship.”

Flanked by key officials — Mr. Oloruntola Olufemi (Permanent Secretary, FMM&BE), Dr. Dayo Mobereola (Director General, NIMASA), and Mr. Babatunde Bombata (Director of Maritime Safety) 

Oyetola represented Nigeria in strategic discussions with global policymakers and business leaders. The goal: to shape a sustainable ocean-based economy in an era of climate urgency and economic transition.

The Minister emphasized Nigeria’s alignment with international best practices in maritime policy, from environmental protection and marine biodiversity conservation to safety at sea and green shipping initiatives.

According to a statement released by Mr. Osagie Edward, Assistant Director of Public Relations, the Nigerian delegation's participation was more than symbolic , it was strategic. It signaled Nigeria's readiness to be a serious player in the global blue economy landscape.

The Blue Economy and Finance Forum serves as a critical platform for governments, private sector actors, and development institutions to co-create solutions for the sustainable use of marine resources. Nigeria’s strong showing at the forum sent a clear message: the country is not just talking about sustainability. it’s taking action.

As the world turns increasingly to the oceans for answers to food security, renewable energy, and climate resilience, Nigeria is navigating confidently toward a future where the blue economy becomes a cornerstone of national development.
