NUJ@70: Customs CG Adewale Adeniyi Honoured for Championing Press Freedom
In a night filled with pride, reflection, and celebration, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) marked its 70th anniversary in grand style at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, on Saturday, June 21, 2025.
Among the distinguished personalities recognized was the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, who was presented with the Media Promoter and Advocate of Press Freedom Award. This award celebrates his exceptional support for journalism, press freedom, and strategic communication within public service.
The award was presented by Bauchi State’s Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Jatau, on behalf of the NUJ Anniversary Committee. Receiving it on behalf of the CGC was Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), who expressed deep appreciation.
“This recognition is a profound honour for the Nigeria Customs Service,” said AC Maiwada. “The CGC, being a communications professional himself, knows the critical role of the media in strengthening democracy. He has championed transparency, empowered PR officers across commands, and fostered open access for journalists.”
Under CGC Adeniyi’s leadership, the Nigeria Customs Service has redefined its public image, embracing media relations, proactive information sharing, and stakeholder engagement as tools for building public trust.
“This award is motivation to deepen our media partnership even further,” Maiwada added. “We remain committed to transparency, support for journalism, and global best practices.”
Another highlight of the evening was the recognition of Retired Comptroller UK Bello, the Kanwan of Katsina, who received the Media Support Award for his long-standing commitment to media relations. Known for his professionalism as both a long-serving Command PRO and later an Area Controller, Bello’s legacy of open communication and service transparency continues to inspire.
“I dedicate this honour to all Service officers who believe in the power of communication,” he remarked. “I’m also grateful to the CGC for continuing the transformation we’ve long envisioned in the Service.”
These awards reflect a broader shift within the Nigeria Customs Service—from a traditional revenue-collection agency to a modern, people-centered institution. With strategic communication, digital engagement, and transparency at the heart of its reform agenda, the NCS under CGC Adeniyi is aligning itself with global best practices and national development goals.
As NUJ celebrates 70 years of journalism excellence, the evening’s honours reaffirm the essential partnership between the media and public institutions and the power of communication in nation-building.
