The Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has launched a new scholarship initiative to support the children of commercial drivers currently studying in universities.
The programme was introduced by the Lagos State NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle Sego, as part of efforts to strengthen welfare support for union members across the state.
₦500,000 Scholarship for Each Beneficiary
Under the initiative, each selected beneficiary will receive ₦500,000 to assist with their university education.
Speaking during the announcement, Sego highlighted the important role commercial drivers play in the daily movement of people and goods across Lagos. He noted that the union has a responsibility not only to its members but also to their families.
“Our drivers work tirelessly every day to keep Lagos moving, and it is only right that we support their families and invest in the future of their children,” he said.
Appreciation for Union Leadership
Sego also used the opportunity to commend members of the union’s State Executive Council for their contributions to the administration.
According to him, many of the key decisions made under the current leadership have been reached through collective discussions and cooperation among council members.
“I want to sincerely appreciate my State Executive Council members because most of the decisions we are taking in this administration are done collectively. Their cooperation, advice, and commitment have been very important in helping us move the union forward,” he stated.
Commitment to Members’ Welfare
The NURTW chairman further expressed gratitude to union members across Lagos State for their continued unity and support. He said the cooperation from members has strengthened the leadership’s efforts to improve welfare within the union.
Sego acknowledged that many members had long expected impactful welfare programmes and assured them that the current leadership remains committed to delivering meaningful support.
According to him, the scholarship programme is just one of several welfare initiatives the union plans to introduce.
“We will continue to prioritize welfare, discipline, and proper management across all NURTW activities in Lagos State. This scholarship initiative is just one of many steps we will continue to take to support our members and their families,” Sego added
