President Tinubu Honours NPA Boss Abubakar Dantsoho for Pioneering Maritime Infrastructure Modernization

The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu In a ceremony filled with national pride and celebration of public excellence presented Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), with the prestigious Award of Excellence in Maritime Infrastructure Modernization & Global Competitiveness.

The event took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during the flagship Nigeria Excellence Awards in Public Service (NEAPS), a high-profile annual recognition platform coordinated by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. NEAPS is designed to spotlight public officers whose commitment, innovation, and leadership have significantly advanced Nigeria’s development priorities.

Dr. Dantsoho’s recognition did not come as a surprise to industry observers. Over the past year, he has emerged as a transformational figure within Nigeria’s maritime ecosystem. His leadership at the NPA has been marked by bold reforms, strategic partnerships, and a determined push toward global best practices.

One of the standout achievements highlighted at the ceremony was the massive improvement in port efficiency that contributed to Nigeria’s attainment of a national trade surplus. By championing operational systems that boosted export volumes and streamlined logistics processes, Dantsoho helped reposition the country’s ports as engines of economic growth.

Under his stewardship, the NPA made significant strides toward establishing the long-awaited National Single Window (NSW), an integrated digital environment that links government agencies, port users, and logistic providers. A major component of this effort is the Port Community System (PCS), which Dantsoho has vigorously promoted as the backbone of Nigeria’s port digitalization journey.

This modernization drive has not gone unnoticed by global maritime investors, many of whom have shown heightened interest in Nigeria’s port infrastructure and equipment renewal programs.

Beyond domestic achievements, Dr. Dantsoho has played a key diplomatic and leadership role internationally. His tenure has coincided with Nigeria’s rising influence within global maritime institutions. The country currently holds:

Presidency of the Port Management Association of West Africa (PMAWCA)

Vice-Presidency of the International Association for Ports & Harbours (IAPH)

Additionally, with the strategic support of the Hon. Minister of Marine & Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, Nigeria successfully regained its seat in the influential Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a significant milestone symbolizing the country’s renewed global relevance.

A Celebration of Vision and Leadership

As Dr. Dantsoho received the award from President Tinubu, the moment symbolized more than personal recognition, it represented a turning point for Nigeria’s maritime narrative. His work continues to inspire confidence that the nation is moving steadily toward modern, competitive, and globally integrated port operations.

For many stakeholders, this award stands as validation of the reforms underway and a powerful reminder that visionary leadership can reshape entire sectors.
