Apapa Port Tightens Security as Customs Intercepts Cocaine on Brazilian Vessel

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Apapa Area Command Security has been deepened at Lagos’ Apapa Port after officers intercepted 25.5 kilograms of cocaine concealed aboard a Brazilian vessel, MV San Anthonio. The illicit drug, found during a targeted intelligence-led operation, was packed in 24 parcels stuffed into five bags and hidden within the ship.

In a statement released on Saturday, 6 December 2025, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Isah Sulaiman, confirmed that the vessel has been immediately detained as investigations continue.

Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, described the seizure as a major success achieved through the strengthened cooperation between the NCS and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He noted that the ship’s travel pattern, originating from Brazil and making stops in well-known narcotics trafficking corridors such as Honduras and Guatemala has triggered heightened scrutiny by customs intelligence units.

According to him, the interception underscores the Command’s resolve to enforce the zero-tolerance of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, particularly as the year-end festive period approaches.

“This seizure and detention of the ship should send a strong signal to those attempting to use our ports for unlawful activities. We are deepening our collaboration with all sister agencies, and no criminal network can outsmart the system here,” Oshoba said.

He further emphasized that despite the increased cargo movement expected during the Yuletide season, the Service will prioritize national security over trade pressure.

“All consignments leaving Apapa Port must be properly examined and confirmed to match their declarations. We will not compromise the security and economy of this nation,” he added.

At a brief handover ceremony, Haliru Umar, Commander of the NDLEA’s Apapa Strategic Command, officially received the seized narcotics from Customs. The NDLEA is expected to commence full-scale investigations and take further action.

The operation reflects ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to clamp down on transnational drug trafficking and reinforce security across the nation's busiest seaport.
