NIWA Deploys Heavy Machinery to Combat Water Hyacinth in Ikorodu Waterways
The Lagos Area Office of National Inland Water Authority (NIWA) has deployed a specialized task force, equipped with heavy-duty machinery including swamp devils, harvesters, and other essential equipment. The team has already begun preliminary clearing operations around Ebute Ikorodu and the Ikpakodo ferry terminal to ensure the waterways remain safe, navigable, and obstruction-free.
In determined effort to safeguard boat transportation and other maritime activities in Lagos’ littoral communities, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has launched a major operation to clear water hyacinth buildup along the Ikorodu axis.
According to Lagos Area Manager of NIWA, Engr. Sarat Braimah, , the deployment is a proactive measure aimed at maintaining uninterrupted boat and ferry operations in the Ikorodu waterways — a zone that often suffers from recurring infestations of the invasive aquatic weed.
“We have carefully studied the pattern and spread of the water hyacinth phenomenon and have chosen to act swiftly to mitigate its impact before it disrupts transportation and economic activities,” Braimah stated.
Beyond transportation, the menace of water hyacinth also threatens local fishing and other livelihood activities. Engr. Braimah highlighted the importance of early intervention, noting that the Managing Director of NIWA, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, has awarded a nationwide contract to tackle the challenge. She added that she would personally monitor the ongoing clearing operations to ensure effective execution.
The cleanup exercise is expected to deliver immediate relief to communities around Ikorodu by restoring free movement for goods and passengers and supporting local fishermen who depend on the waterways.
This initiative forms part of NIWA’s broader national strategy to curb the spread of water hyacinth and enhance inland waterway transportation. The Lagos Area Office’s proactive approach demonstrates the authority’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that Nigeria’s waterways remain functional, safe, and economically productive.
As the clearing continues, NIWA is calling on stakeholders including transport operators and community members to support the ongoing efforts to keep the waterways clean and navigable.
