NIMASA Champions Local Capacity as Deep Blue Vessel Undergoes Repairs at Nigerdock
The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has reiterated the agency’s commitment to fostering local shipbuilding and repair capabilities.
This affirmation came during Dr. Mobereola’s recent inspection visit to Nigerdock, situated within the Snake Island Integrated Free Zone in Lagos, where maintenance work is currently underway on DB Lagos a special mission vessel under NIMASA’s flagship Deep Blue Project.
According to a press release by Osagie Edward, FNIPR, Head of Public Relations at NIMASA, DB Lagos plays a vital role in Nigeria’s maritime surveillance and national security framework. The vessel is deployed to combat oil theft, smuggling, illegal immigration, and other maritime crimes within Nigeria’s territorial waters.
During the visit, Dr. Mobereola expressed satisfaction with the progress and quality of work being carried out, commending the competence of the local workforce.
“What I am seeing here today is a testimony to the fact that we have the ability not only to repair but also to build here in Nigeria,” he stated.
He further highlighted that this initiative supports the vision of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, who has been a strong advocate for increased local involvement in shipbuilding and maintenance.
“We at NIMASA are demonstrating our belief in this vision by maintaining our own vessels here,” Dr. Mobereola added.
The DB Lagos is a critical asset within the broader Deep Blue Project Nigeria’s integrated maritime security initiative aimed at curbing criminal activity in the Gulf of Guinea. The project features a coordinated deployment of vessels, aircraft, and land-based assets to secure the country’s maritime domain.
This development underscores NIMASA’s ongoing commitment to empowering local stakeholders, reducing dependence on foreign dry docking facilities, and advancing the federal government’s blue economy agenda.
