Customs Warns Public Against Fake Recruitment and Auction Scams on Social Media
AC Maiwada, National Public Relations Officer of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS)
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has alerted the public to a surge in fraudulent recruitment and auction scams being circulated on social media platforms. These schemes, which falsely claim links to the Service, often involve impersonation of senior Customs officials, including the Comptroller-General and retired officers.
At a media briefing in Abuja, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer, condemned the scams as criminal efforts to defraud Nigerians and tarnish the image of the NCS. He reiterated that the Service does not conduct recruitment or auctions via social media or unverified channels.
As part of ongoing investigations, a suspect, Mr. Okoli Okana Boniface, was arrested on 16 June 2025 for allegedly impersonating an aide to First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and attempting to influence the recruitment process. The Customs Police Unit has since launched a thorough investigation into the case.
Maiwada emphasized the NCS’s zero-tolerance policy on fraud and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of its operations. He advised the public to remain vigilant and verify all recruitment and auction information through the Service’s official communication platforms.
“We urge Nigerians to disregard unsolicited messages and offers from unverified sources. Always rely on our official channels for accurate and up-to-date information,” Maiwada said.
